Maregraphe Mega Extended is a wild extension of the Maregraphe collection, which grew out of a text on the wall of a Marseille tide gauge (marégraphe in French), a coastal station that has been there since the late 19th century, daily measuring the change in sea level.
Resorting to the same references as a more conventional serif would, Maregraphe Mega Extended answers the question of how wide a serif typeface can be all while staying at least somewhat readable and not causing any trouble to designers working on 13-inch laptops.
Like the rest of the Maregraphe collection, Mega Extended comes in an impressive character set: stylistic alternates, small caps, regular, tabular, and text figures (with each set fitted with a number of currency signs, mathematical symbols, and punctuation), circled numbers, super- and subscripts, and arrows.
The larger the size you choose while dealing with Maregraphe Mega Extended, the better — it would be a great fit for designing, let’s say, travelator walls at airports, an exhibition billboard covering the entire façade of a museum building, or interior graphics. Maregraphe Mega Extended is so wide that some characters (like M and W) exceed what some Adobe developers consider the maximum glyph width. As a result, in certain software versions, these characters might get clipped. However, in Illustrator, wide characters display correctly if you convert the text to outlines. Until we manage to change Adobe’s perspective on ultra-wide serifs, we are offering a 10% discount on desktop licenses for Maregraphe Mega Extended.
